Here鈥檚 a look at the 2025 honorees and why their work matters.
We鈥檙e honored to recognize Dr. Alexis Clare of Alfred University as the recipient of this year鈥檚 Women in Glass Award, sponsored by the Air Products Foundation.
Dr. Clare is a distinguished leader in glass science and a Fellow of both the Society of Glass Technology (UK) and the American Ceramic Society. Her extensive research has advanced understanding across diverse areas 鈥� from photonics and biomaterials to applied and industrial glass technologies.
Beyond her scientific achievements, Dr. Clare has made an enduring mark as an educator and mentor. Her creativity and energy in the classroom have inspired countless students to explore innovation within the field. Her groundbreaking 1990s video, 鈥淲hat is Ceramic Engineering?鈥�, introduced a new generation to the world of glass and ceramics.
Dr. Clare鈥檚 inclusive, student-centered approach continues to shape the next wave of glass scientists. As one former student reflected, 鈥淒r. Clare made her grad students feel like family… and that openness led to great sharing of ideas in science and research.鈥�

We鈥檙e proud to announce Neil Simpson of Simpson Combustion & Energy as the recipient of this year鈥檚 Glass Innovator Award, sponsored by CelSian.
Throughout his career, Neil has redefined what鈥檚 possible in combustion technology and energy efficiency. From developing the first Simpson burner for LCV wood gas in 1993 鈥� still applicable to modern lehr and oven operations 鈥� to advancing burner design, furnace control, and operator training, his work has had a lasting impact across the global glass industry.
With 17 patent applications and a long history of mentoring and teaching at the Glass Problems Conference, Neil has elevated technical excellence and inspired countless professionals along the way.
